"You'll lose weight if you burn more calories than you take in," but their is a way to manipulate your body to stay away from plateus and sticking points, and that's by starting your calories as high as possible. When you do this it makes dieting easy because when you fall into a sticking point all you have to do is lower your calories a smidge. It gives you room to adjust your diet.
As a personal trainer in the NY area I have done this with my clients and have seen weight loss week after week because they never run into a plateu.
Get Rid Of Bad Habits Before Calories
Before you lower your calories to lose weight. First remove the bad habits. Take away the fast food,sweets, and lattes and replace them with more nutrient dense dishes. Great weight loss diets should progressively changing which means consistent fat loss. As long as your changing it for the better!
You Need A Plan
Listen I am a personal trainer and I don't plan my meals daily, but I do recommend that your ready, when your body starts to adjust to your original food patterns. Once this occurs have a plan ready.
So for example: if I am on a 12 week diet, maybe I'll take carbs out past 7pm. Then when my body adjusts to that maybe I'll eat a little less in meal 3 and 4.
Just keep making progressions but "have them ready to implement."
