Hot cereals are an excellent alternative to the traditional cold cereal and milk breakfast. They come in different forms such as grits, oatmeal, and cream of wheat. There are also some other hot cereal options. Some of them are grain mixes put together by manufacturers. Others are simple cereals such as kashi or oatmeal. Either way, the hot cereals that you choose are common in that they are a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Now, cold cereal manufacturers have decided to provide consumers with hot cereal options. This is both bad and good. Things like oatmeal, grits, and cream if wheat have been available for some time by themselves. But now people have found a way to cut down on the cooking time. This could save time but some feel as if you lose some of the nutrition value. Also it is important to understand that it is better to buy the plain cereal and sweeten it yourself with honey or pure maple syrup than it is to buy the cereal already sweetened.
Although the cereals are widely available, it can be problematic because the ones that are already flavored are often very high in sugar. So even though something may read that it is low in fat or cholesterol, that does not automatically guarantee that it will be a good food choice. Be careful to choose cereal options that are nutritious but that also provide a high amount of flavor.
There are several ways to add flavor to hot cereals than by adding sugar. A small amount or honey, blackstrap molasses, or maple sugar is much better than sugar. You can also use sugar substitutes such as stevia or artificial sweetener packets. Keep in mind that you can also use dried fried or fresh fruit as an alternative to sugar or other sweetener. You can also use apple sauce. Hot cereals are good for you, you just need to be careful that you do not consume too much sugar. If you do, it could defeat the purpose for breakfast because it will not make it more nutritious. You can also use spices such as cinnamon to provide flavor and nutrition and replace much of the sweetener.
