If every parent had the time to prepare home-cooked, fresh meals on a daily basis, and was able to keep a 24-hour watch on what their children were eating and undertaking in their spare time, then obesity would simply not be the problem that it is today. Many parents have let things slide; not because they don't care, but because they simply didn't realize the importance of getting a child's diet right - nor do they always have the time in which to do so.
So we'll start from the premise that you are busy. You may have faddy eaters in the house, a child who has adopted an unhealthy attitude towards food or one who is addicted to snacks and junk food. You may have an ad-hoc food policy in your household, where everyone eats pretty much what they want when they want, fitted around the busy schedules of all family members. Your kids may also have little understanding of what unhealthy foods do to their bodies or, indeed, what constitutes an unhealthy food.
Our parents undoubtedly had it easier. Many of us grew up in households where at least one parent, usually the mother, was at home to prepare a meal three times a day. Convenience and junk foods existed, but on a much smaller scale, so there weren't the same temptations to resort to them in the place of healthy fare. We usually ate together as a family and, being more active, were generally hungry enough to eat what was put in front of us.
Today, it's a whole different ballgame, with a new set of rules for kids and parents alike. So how does the average parent create and maintain a healthy diet in the face of the pressures of time, advertising, kid power, peer pressure and the wealth of unhealthy food on the market? It is possible, but it does take a little extra work on your part, and that of your whole family - not a ridiculous amount of work, but at least some effort. If you are reading this article, you are already concerned enough about your child to do something to help him with his weight. And concern and interest are enough to get you started.
