The Importance of Water

We all know that water is vital to the human body.  But did you know that water composes over two thirds of our weight?  Our brains are ninety-five percent water, our blood is eighty-two percent, and our lungs are a stunning ninety percent water.  Water really is essential to our body.

Dehydration is generated when our body’s water supply has as little as a two percent decrease.  Signs of dehydration include symptoms such as fuzzy short-term memory, difficulty focusing on smaller print, trouble with basic math, and daytime fatigue.  Even though water is readily available to us in the United States, an estimated seventy-five percent of us have chronic dehydration.

Water is one of the major components that keep our bodies functioning.  It forms the base for saliva, it is the fluid that surrounds our joints, it serves as a lubricant to our system, it regulates our metabolism and alleviates constipation, and it controls our body temperature through perspiration.  Without water, our cells and organs simply cannot function.  That is why a person can go for days without food, but very little time without water before feeling the effects.

Water plays a key role in the prevention of disease in addition to keeping our bodies functioning.  If you drink the recommended eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day you can decrease your risk of colon cancer by forty-five percent and bladder cancer by fifty percent.  What other way is there to reduce your risk so easily?  Of course, ensuring that the water you drink is clean and contaminant free is vital to enjoying the benefits water brings.  A good filtration system in your home can put your mind at ease about the quality of your water.

Water can even help you lose weight by helping you feel full and eat less.  With all the many benefits to drinking water, why drink anything else?  Water doesn’t just come from a glass though.  Many foods are rich in water, including salads, soups, vegetables, and fruits like melons, apples, and oranges.  Drinking water doesn’t have to be a burden or a diet regime; it can be a healthful exercise that keeps your body in first-rate condition.  Are you thirsty yet?
