I've read about and researched countless books on differing diet regimens for the past twenty years of my life, and I must say that a lot of them tend to be very persuasive in their concepts and ideas. After all, that's what an author's jobs is, to persuade the reader that their ideas and concepts are the "right thing to do". However, some do leave you with a slight taste of propaganda in your mouth, because they end up going off the deep end a bit into a sort of mania against certain types of foods and "for" other types of foods.
Heck, some diets go off into downright cultish recommendations and manic avoidance of entire food groups. I'm not one to go by any strict diet that completely disallows a whole food group, unless it has been identified as something that I'm allergic to or something that will certainly lead to multiple health problems for me.
I take a pinch of my Grandma's wisdom with any diet regimen I read about which is "everything in moderation". This all brings me to the latest diet that I have been interested in and reading a lot about lately, mostly because of the central principle that it operates from, which is the principle of alkaline vs. acidic foods.
The more I read about this diet, the more it made sense to me, especially when I considered that the food proponents of the alkaline diet claim are "acid creating" in the body such as red meats and cheese, are the ones that cause me the most digestive discomfort and acid reflux. It did appeal to my common sense as well, which is why I kept reading about it with interest.
The basis is that Americans have such an acidic diet that it actually alters that body's pH balance and creates toxic waste and acid salt buildup in the body, which in turn contributes to our most common diseases and ailments, such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, and last but not least and most speculatively with caution, cancer.
By eating more alkaline foods, some of which include cucumbers, avocados, lemon and citrust juices, and green vegetables such as broccoli, proponents claims that you can actually neutralize some of this damaging acidity in the body, and return to more of a homeostasis of balanced pH. They claim that by balancing the body's acidity and alkalinity, you are less likely to develop degenerative diseases, and even less likely to get sick since disease and sickness cannot thrive in an alkaline environment.
What's intriguing about the alkaline diet is that there are a lot of people who have said they've been able to quit medications they had to take for years after being on the diet for a while, and also people that swear that it has made them more resistant to sicknesses such as colds and the flu. Could there be something to this?
A lot of people also think that an alkaline diet helps with skin problems, mental imbalance, longevity, inflammatory diseases, and last but not least, a lot of people believe that this type of diet can be a powerful weapon against cancer. There are some in the medical establishment of course that may vehemently deny these types of claims, but I think it's one of those things you'd have to try and then judge for yourself, as we know not all parties are neutral on these types of issues.
I for one do believe there is some truth to this type of regimen and the fact that it can help you live as a thinner, healthier person. Will I go full fledged alkaline? I doubt it. There are too many foods that I like such as whole wheat products and starches that are supposedly acidic to the system, but if you can balance your foods better to at least include more alkaline foods, I think even this can benefit your body.
